Back. On. Top. Arsenal re-assert title credentials after professional result against Wolves

It would have been easy for a dispirited, depressed, even defeated Arsenal squad to arrive at Molineux on Saturday ready to throw in the towel, ready to accept the bottle-job label that all of our opponents and too many of our supporters were eager to tar us with. Even if or precisely because Wolves were depleted, conditions were ripe for us to slip on a very slippery, very ripe banana. To see us go out and shrug off those former factors and overcome the latter suggest that we do in fact have the minerals to end the season precisely where we find ourselves as of this writing—top of the league.

Arsenal had better be wary of wounded Wolves.

They’re safe from relegation. It would take a miracle for them to qualify for Europe. A least a half-dozen players are injured, including vital ones like Neto, Dawson, Cunha, and Semedo; Hwang may only be partially available. We haven’t lost to Wolves in our last five outings. Even their angst-ridden reactions to our celebrating seems to have died down, tamping down what had started to feel like a proper, old-school rivalry. Despite my talking things down, we have to expect Wolves to be up for it.

Arsenal 2-1 Wolves—vote for player ratings & MOTM!

For the first 25 minutes, it looked like we were going to go one better than our midweek waltz past Lens; early goals from Saka and Ødegaard put us 2-0 to the good after just 13 minutes. From there, however, the game seemed to slow down more and more…and more. That was until Zinchenko got dispossessed in the 86th minute as he too-tentatively tried to carry the ball out of his own area, leading to Cunha scoring a goal to lead to some nervy, tense times as an inspired Wolves side probed for an equaliser. Six minutes of stoppage time weren’t enough, but it wasn’t for a lack of effort. In the end, we may have been fortunate to escape with all three despite that early dominance & fluidity. Ah, well—it’s three points banked either way. Let’s rate the lads!

Are Gooners still taunting Wolves with our celebrating, or is that…passé?

Today’s match previews takes us down the dusky, dusty halls of antiquity, way back to February 2022, when we bested Wolves 1-0. At the time, not-at-all-salty Wolves midfielder Rúben Neves complained that we acted like we had “won the league”. He went on to add that our celebrations “shows the level we are”. As I pointed out at the time, Rúbe (can I call you that? It feels almost too close to calling you a rube…), our celebrations were not about defeating your club; they were about taking a step towards Champions League qualification. I’d explain what that is, Rúbe, but I’m a lazy, lazy man.

Arsenal linked to “SHOCK” move for want-away Wolves Winger!

Yes, that’s yellow journalism at its best, but I couldn’t resist. As the international break drags on, there’s bound to be a dearth of actual news. Think of it as a precursor to the January window, during which rumours and actual transfers may transpire. With tongue planted firmly in cheek and grains of salt confidently taken, we can kick the tyres on one of the wilder transfer rumours to be making the rounds, that of one Pedro Neto from Wolves to Woolwich—sorry, to Arsenal. Alliteration has a way of getting away with me…
