PSV 1-1 Arsenal: Results of post-match ratings poll

A low-effort post here, just to get the results of our post-match poll up. Reiss Nelson claimed the MOTM thanks in part to his assist for Nketiah’s goal. Mikel’s rating is laughably low, and I say that as one who was critical of his lineup and substitutions. It’s arguably just as important (perhaps more so) to give second-string players like Jorginho, Elneny, Cedric, Nketiah, Nelson, and Trossard meaningful minutes as it is to give Sousa, Hein, Walters, or Nwaneri cameos. We’ll depend on the former group far more than we will the latter, after all. At any rate, we won the group, got through a meaningless match with a heavily rotated side, and will now await Monday’s group stage draw.

The kids are alright…or are they? They have to get out in the light!

It was a dead rubber match. We’d won the group already. There was nothing to play for, and Arteta’s decision to name three Academy players—Lino Sousa, Reuell Walters, and Ethan Nwaneri—quickened some pulses. Here, it seemed, we’d see some promising players blooded. Maybe one of them would earn a chance at more time with the first team, at least during mop-up duty towards the tail-end of Prem matches. Alas, it was not to be. What gives, Mikel? In the pre-match, you were gung-ho about giving them a chance. Quailing away is not a good look

Arsenal 2-0 Sevilla—vote for player ratings & MOTM!

We waltzed to a comfortable over Sevilla through a nifty goal from a sumptuous pass from Jorginho to Saka who squared to Trossard to sidefoot home. Havertz had several chances denied by some last-gasp tackles but came away empty-handed. Bukayo Saka seemed to land awkwardly, injure his ankle, and have to come off in the 85th minute. It looked minor, but it’s definitely a nervous development even as the result puts us firmly in control of Group B. Let’s get to the poll to rate the lads!

Arsenal have a chance to advance with a win over Sevilla

Okay, so winning would quite guarantee us a chance at advancing from the group stage, but it would go a long way towards that goal. We currently sit top of Group B on six points with RC Lens on five and Sevilla on just two. Get ready for some advanced maths. Should we defeat Sevilla, we climb to nine points and leave Sevilla capable of only reaching eight points. If RC Lens can defeat PSV Eindhoven, the Dutch side face that same fate—and we advance. The only remaining question would concern whether we can win the group. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet, though. First, Sevilla.

Ødegaard is our MOTM after trouncing PSV!

It’s not enough that a player scores what turns out to be the match-winning goal, assists the goal that puts the match on ice, and fails to win MOTM, but Martin Ødegaard’s all-around maestro-esque performance managed to attract 67.3% of the votes while Saka could only garner 11.4%. It’s a testament to the Norwegian’s preternatural talent and leadership but may also reflect the fact that he played the full match. It feels like we were a bit harsh on Havertz; he performed better than White, and Raya didn’t have much to do. It might be that Havertz is going to have score some goals. His all-around effort, if not on Ødegaard’s level, is still not attracting the praise it deserves. Let’s hope he picks the NLD for his breakthrough. For now, though, enjoy the graphic results!
