“I thought Arsenal had two top keepers. Do they even have one?”

When Arsenal took David Raya on loan from Brentford, there was some confusion. Som consternation, even. Over the previous season, despite a late dip, Ramsdale looked to have locked down his position between the sticks, having displace Bernd Leno (himself one of our best players of the Emery EraTM). Mat Turner was not a challenger adequate to keeping Ramsdale on this toes, so in came Raya. While many of the metrics suggest that is the superior keeper, has either man’s performance to date impressed?

What the hell is wrong with Raya? Ramsdale would like a word…

Say what you will about the ball going out of bounds or Joelinton cradling said ball between both arms before shoving Gabriel to the ground before said ball falling to Anthony Gordon who scored from an offside position. Any one of those should have been enough to disallow the goal, nevermind all four of them at once. And yet. All of that would have been water under a bridge had Raya, our £28m signing (er, loan), dealt with Willock’s cross as one might expect any keeper at this level would have.

Seems pretty clear that it’s time to rotate Ramsdale & Raya…

5.31, 3.76, 5.83, 4.04. These are the ratings we’ve given to David Raya in his last four starts. That’s an average of just 4.735, surely the lowest among our starters. It’s downright Nketiahn. Raya, despite being superior to Ramsdale on paper, has failed to convince to thoroughly on the pitch. He’s been caught out, gifted possession to opponents inside the 18, and flubbed his lines. We’ve been very, very fortunate that our opponents haven’t made more of the chances they’ve been given. Surely, it’s time for Arteta to show some of that trademark ruthlessness and start Ramsdale on Saturday.

Has Raya replaced Ramsdale…for real?

Two starts. Two clean sheets. It appears that Aaron Ramsdale’s reign is over and David Raya’s has already begun. Relegated to the bench against Everton and PSV after failing to keep clean sheets in four of our first five matches, it could be that Ramsdale will be lucky to play in League Cup and FA Cup matches while Raya gobbles up the Prem and Champions League minutes. It’s just that simple. It’s tradition. You have one keeper who starts and one who sits unless there’s an emergency…right?

By signing Raya, has “ruthless” Arteta hung Ramsdale out to dry?

Man. I don’t know what they’re smoking over there at the Emirates, but it’s some heady stuff. It wasn’t so long ago that Leno and Tierney were counted among our best players, but they’ve each been ousted with a quickness so dizzying that one would be left wondering whether either one was any good at all. So it may also go with Ramsdale, who’s gone from hero to mare to such an extent that we’ve loaned David Raya in from Brentford for £3m plus a £27m buy option clause. It’s not often that you see competition for who’ll be a club’s #1 GK, but here we are.
